Kayfabe is carny terminology meaning "be fake," in
the sense that spectators need not be in on the truth of the illusion or
hustle. The term was adopted by
professional wrestling as a policy for wrestlers to not break character in
order to maintain the claim of genuine sport.
Inspired by such examples of cultural fascination with the
faked, Mark Earnhart's solo exhibition examines the interplay between the
artificial and the genuine in commonplace circumstances and in common objects
and materials. A series of minimal objects and sculptural installations respond
to, and challenge, accepted ideas of the familiar and fantastical.
