The Women’s and Gender
Studies Center is pleased to invite you to a special event in celebration of
Women’s History Month which includes a film viewing, panel discussion and reception.
On Tuesday, March 24, the award-winning film
Iron Jawed Angels will be shown in LA
205, beginning at 6pm. Starring Hillary Swank (Alice Paul) and Angelica
Huston (Carrie Chapman Catt), the film follows the militant suffragist movement
in the United States, which demanded that women receive the right to vote. The
suffragists, arrested and confined to jail, protested with hunger strikes. The
suffragists used nonviolent mass action and actively worked for the passage of
the 19th Amendment. Following the film will a panel discussion and
time for questions. Dr. Emily Arendt (Department of History), Dr. Sam Boerboom
(Department of Communication) and MSUB history student Tracey Miller will
provide their perspectives on the film and the broader issue of women and
politics.
There will also be a special presentation from MSUB History
students, organized by Dr. Emily Arendt, from 3:00 - 4:30 on Wednesday, March
25 in LA 205. “Personal and Political: Women’s History in
Montana and Beyond,” will feature three talks by MSUB history majors interested
in gender history in regional and national perspectives. Tracey Miller will be
exploring the emergence of the women’s rights movement on the national scale in
the 1800s and considering how women’s involvement in politics opened the door
to gender equality on a larger scale. Thinking beyond partisan politics,
James Ellis will be discussing the various forms of activism engaged in by
women in Butte, Montana at the turn of the century. Recognizing that
individual women are as important in the history of America as large-scale
social movements, Tessa Kilsdonk will be discussing her research into the
personal histories of two Montana women.
These events are
sponsored by the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences with
